The Weta is the nearest “out of the box” boat to what we are after. So why not just get one?
I’ve been out and sailed one and honestly they are great little boats. Easy to tow, easy to launch and retrieve, well made and thought out.
Only thing is they are not quite right….
What the hell does that mean? Well, just a bit slow? 2 up a bit small and slower? With the occasional lumps I have as crew I think it would be a bit small especially in light winds. Also for camp cruising, adding outboard/pedal power, I’m less keen on tooling around with a plastic boat.
There are a decent number here in the UK and I even looked at becoming the UK distributor but speaking with the chairman of the Association really put me off I have to say.
Anyway, I guess the real reason is how do I modify it to do exactly what I want? Some raid style sailing? I can botch on a motor – a guy in Poole has done so already I believe. Someone in Oz I think has put on some “foil assist”.
But still not entirely convinced.
I can’t really put my finger on it but a 16-18 foot Weta with foil option would almost certainly be ideal. Big enough with more power (especially for sailing with crew) but still single handed capable.
